HON. BARRY P. SARKISIAN (Ret.)

Judge Sarkisian has had a background in the field of municipal law with focus on rent control law and Landlord Tenant law since 1973 and is well known in the Hudson County community where Judge Sarkisian grew up, attended local high school and college, and continues to live.

 

Prior to being appointed to the New Jersey Superior Court in 2005 until his retirement in 2018, Judge Sarkisian had served as Town Attorney for
the Town of West New York and also as Rent Control Board attorney for the Towns of Union City, Hoboken, West New York and Guttenberg. In these roles, he has provided legal services not only to the Boards he served, but also assisted governing bodies in those communities to address landlord/ tenant concerns by local ordinance legislation. He is currently special counsel to the City of Union City providing similar services and
also providing assistance to municipal counsel facing litigation involving those issues.

 

In addition to the above, Judge Sarkisian is available to serve as an independent hearing officer for disciplinary hearings, both major and minor discipline, involving civil service employees and non civil service employees.
 

Judge Sarkisian is also available to serve as an independent investigator and/or advisor of harassment and civil rights claims; advising litigation counsel on options to institute litigation to compel owners of multi family residential properties to comply with local and State housing code regulations; local government ethics law issues ( NJSA 40A: 9-22.1 et seq.); and issues involving the Open Public Records Act (OPRA); Open Public Meetings Act; Local Public Contracts Law; and Municipal Land Use Law.

Judge Sarkisian also served as President of the Hudson County Bar Association and North Hudson Lawyers Club as well as serving on the Ethics and Fee Arbitration Committees of Hudson County.
