About Us

Robert Gilchrist and Issac Scudder, two lawyers guided by entrepreneurial spirit, founded Schumann Hanlon Margulies in 1850 as "Scudder and Gilchrist". Today, as then, the same entrepreneurial spirit guides us in providing legal services to our clients. Our law firm's Jersey City office is located just across the street from our founders' first office. We are now one of the metropolitan area's most prominent mid-sized law firms, providing a full range of legal services to businesses and individuals.

Since 1850, we have earned our clients' trust by exercising good judgment and wise counsel. We pledge to maintain your trust. We are in the "business of law". In other words, we provide quality legal services at reasonable rates that our clients have come to expect. We have divided the legal disciplines into Practice Groups. To address our clients' needs our Practice Groups allow us to draw upon the cumulative knowledge and expertise of lawyers experienced in a number of seemingly diverse areas of the law. Our size gives us the breadth as well as the flexibility to service your needs without the inefficiencies common to larger firms.

Over the course of our 168 years, we have represented major financial institutions, privately held companies, business entities and developers, private equity firms, venture capital firms, manufacturing, retail industries and we maintain a people practice as well. Our knowledge and experience is invaluable to our clients. We are here to help.

We are experienced lawyers serving the community.
