  • 1840 - N J Legislature creates Hudson County
  • 1850 - Firm name; Scudder & Gilchrist (Isaac W. Scudder & Robert Gilchrist). Office located at 13 Montgomery St. in a hotel between Hudson & Greene Sts.). NJ population 489,555. California becomes a state.
  • 1851 - R. Gilchrist elected to NJ Assembly
  • 1852 - Office located at 34 & 40 Montgomery St. in a commercial building at NW corner of Montgomery & Green Sts.
  • 1854 - I. Scudder lost election to US Senate as a Whig Party member. Whig Party becomes the Republican Party.
  • 1857 - Firm name; Isaac W. Scudder. Dred Scott decision.
  • 1858 - Office located at 1 Montgomery St. in Darcy House at SW corner of Montgomery & Hudson Sts.
  • 1859 - Charles Darwin publishes Origin of Species.
  • 1861 - R. Gilchrist enters the Union Army as a "3-month enlistee" and serves as a Captain in the 1st NJ Brigade.
  • 1866 - R. Gilchrist, a Johnson Reconstructionist, runs for Congress and lost.
  • 1867 - Alfred Nobel patents dynamite.
  • 1869 - R. Gilchrist begins 6 year term as NJ Atty General. Office located at 61-63 Montgomery St. in Second National Bank Bldg at SE corner of Montgomery & Washington Sts.; now the Frank Guarini U.S. Post Office.
  • 1870 - R. Gilchrist, as NJ Atty. General, issues opinion that people of color have the right to vote.
  • 1871 - Firm begins to represent the Penn. RR.
  • 1872 - Firm name; Scudder & Vredenburgh (James P. Vredenburgh). Jersey City started on a farm owned by Vredenburghs wife's family (Van Vorst). Office located at 126 Washington St.
  • 1873 - I. Scudder serves in US House of Representatives.
  • 1867 - Office located at 260 Washington St. (Second National Bank Bldg.).
  • 1877 - Hudson County Bar Association incorporated. I. Scudder, R. Gilchrist, James B. Vredenburgh and Abram Q. Garretson were incorporators & among the initial members. Garretson was Assn's first VP. Certificate of Incorporation of the NJ State Bar Assn filed, Robert Gilchrist was among its initial eight members. All but two were from Jersey City.
  • 1879 - Women lawyers permitted to argue before US Supreme Court. J. Vredenburgh is main speaker at 100th Anniv. of Jersey City's Revolutionary War Battle of Paulus Hook
  • 1881 - Firm name; James R. Vredenburgh
  • 1883 - Firm name; Vredenburgh & Garretson after A. Q. Garretson resigns as "President" of Hudson Cty. Court of Common Pleas.
  • 1884 - J. Vredenburgh appointed Trustee of the Provident Institute for Savings.

  • 1888 - J. Vredenburgh & A.Q. Garretson found NJ Title Guarantee & Trust Co. J. Vredenburgh is Director of Third National Bank.

  • 1890 - Sherman Antitrust Act passed.
  • 1896 - Supreme Court rules "separate but equal" legal. Spanish-American War.
  • 1898 - J. Vredenburgh & A. Garretson - two of original three incorporators, establish National Biscuit Company (Nabisco).
  • 1899 - J. Vredenburgh elected Hudson County Bar Pres., serves 4 years. Marshall Van Winkle elected to Congress.
  • 1900 - A. Garretson becomes a NJ Supreme Court Justice.
  • 1901 - Firm name; Vredenburgh, Wall & Van Winkle (Albert C. Wall & Marshall Van Winkle) after Van Winkle resigns as Hudson Cty. Asst. Prosecutor of the Pleas. President McKinley shot by anarchist.
  • 1903 - Wright Bros. fly first airplane.
  • 1905 - Albert Einstein proposes Special Theory of Relativity.
  • 1907 - Firm name; Vredenburgh, Wall & Carey (Albert C. Wall, William H. Carey). Picasso begins cubism with Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.
  • 1908 - Albert C. Wall elected Hudson County Bar Pres. serves 4 years.
  • 1909 - NAACP formed in NYC.
  • 1913 - Woodrow Wilson, Democratic President from New Jersey.
  • 1914 - Thomas G. Haight appointed Judge of US District Ct. WW I begins.
  • 1917 - U.S. enters WW I.
  • 1919 - T. G. Haight appointed to US Circuit Ct. of Appeals.
  • 1920 - T. G. Haight resigns from federal bench (pay was too low; $8.5k/yr) & joins firm. Firm name; Wall, Haight, Carey & Hartpence (John A. Hartpence). Office located at 1 Montgomery St. in Fuller Building, formerly Darcy House. 18th Amendment prohibits alcohol. 19th Amendment gives women right to vote. Panama Canal completed.
